We decided to rent a PS4 and Borderlands 2 for a few nights and just have fun! Only 2 player couch co-op on ps3 and xbox 360. The Next Gen Release is called, 'The Handsome Collection' It includes BL2, The Pre-Sequel, and all DLC. You and up to three other friends can crowd around on a single console to play. Bonus points: It's extremely simple to upload characters to the cloud. Say you and a friend both have the game, you can level your characters solo/online on different consoles, then he can come over, download his character and you can continue in split screen. Just as the others are saying, Borderlands: The Handsome Collection is the one that allows for 4 players on the same console (PS4 or Xbox One).
It includes both Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel as well as all their DLCs. I also recommend playing the Telltale Games' Tales from the Borderlands, which is currently only 7.50 for a digital copy through the Playstation Store or 3.25 if you have Playstation Plus. TFTB is 1 player but fun to watch as a group and weigh in on decisions together. Source: Just got done with TFTB and then started Borderlands: The Handsome Collection as a couch co-op on the PS4.
If you want a casual experience I would strongly recommend BL1. And allegedly the performance is worst on PS3 and acceptable on 360. But on either console you can't set FOV which kinda sucks.
However it's still playable. If you go for BL2 be prepared to do a lot of weapon-case-grinding for better gear (drop rates are abysmal) and instantly dying from lucky boss hits. BL1 seems like a much better balanced RPG to me.

Some parts are tricky to do solo. But those parts aren't common, and usually optional, and with the right gear and some patience it's not too bad.
